Abstract

This article collates some aspects of the encounter between the young French girl and the Chinese lover in the novels Dam against the Pacific (1950) and The Lover (1984), both by Marguerite Duras that bring in different narrative construction and discursive perspectives, a thematic insistence: landscape, place, characters. The existential experiences of Marguerite Duras appear in these novels: biographical data, family composition, the traits of her mother and brothers, the romance with the Chinese, her foreign life in Indochina, among others, without being able to say that they are hers. The thematic repetition, however, does not seem like the repetition of the same. Both novels show marks of peculiar narratives that put them in different centerlines: symbolic and real. These differences will be analyzed from the dialogue between literature and psychoanalysis.
