Abstract

The article intents to do a literary analysis on the lyrics by the musician Chico César. The three chosen songs demonstrate quite well this Brazilian musician’s creative potential, based on the semantics analysis of subjects such as negritude and homosexuality, showing his efforts of turning his songs into literary texts. Born in Paraíba, in 1964, Chico César is a contemporaneous musician who brings a diversity of points to think about on the negritude subject, linking the present situation of African descendants and the Brazilian history of five centuries excluding the African people and their descendants. On the homosexuality topic, Chico brings up important consideration points like murders, intolerance and persecution. By those arguments, we can consider that Chico César’s poetic, from the beginning of the 3rd millennium, is easily associated to the lyrical-social gender. Because of his music – and lyrics that are poems – that Chico César has a guaranteed place on MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). Keywords: Chico César; poetry; popular music
