A linguistic approach to the translated literary text: aspects in the construction of the novel They shoot horses, don’t they ? and its Portuguese translation, from the perspective of thematic organization

Abstract

This article analyses Horace McCoy´s They shoot horses, don’t they? and its translation into Portuguese from the perspective of thematic organization at clause and text level. Drawing on systemic functional Linguistics, it examines clause Themes and text hyper- and macroThemes in order to observe how they construct meanings which can be correlated to the theme of the novel and its affiliation to particular literary genre: hard boiled novels. Thematic choices in the original and translated texts are compared and conclusions are drawn as to the impact these choices have upon the overall meaning construed by the text.
