History of the Information System field in Brazil

Abstract

This article aims to understand the historical process of introduction of the academic field of Information System in Brazil. The research conducted interviews with 17 IS teachers and senior researchers in 2016 and 2017. The variables investigated in the research were the historical process, influences, roles and institutions that comprise the conceptual framework of historical social identity. After content analysis the answers were grouped by frequency listing a representative set of information to structure how the historical process took place, making explicit attributes considered representative of the history of the field by its members. The results revealed that during the process of introducing the IS field in Brazil, there was a joint action of distinct elements, but sometimes linked as postgraduate programs, research centers, educational institutions and that were introduced into the process by a group professors/researchers responsible for establishing the academic field of IS.
