Abstract

The exchange of plants and seeds used for cooking or therapeutic purposes was intense and ongoing within the Portuguese empire along the modern era. Based on cookbooks and treatises on the art of healing, this article seeks to capture the uses and knowledge related to some plants, especially those available in pantry, gardens and backyards. It argues that the relations between cooking and domestic pharmacy were intense during the period and emphasizes the importance of the diet to the preservation of health.
