Abstract

This paper investigates the beginnings of samba schools in Recife, seeking to question the constructed versions about the event. The sources used was a group of newspapers excerpts and oral reports of memories. The samba dancers in Recife were seen for many years a portion of the local intelligentsia, as followers of an alien practice, since the samba schools were considered a manifestation of Rio de Janeiro and should not appear on Pernambuco’s land. Perhaps this explains the intellectual silence issue they faced.
