Abstract

The novel The Black Album, written by Hanif Kureishi and published in 1995, tackles questions about identity from very different angles: the young man, son of immigrants; social actors of 1968 and young fundamentalists, but it is also about a specifically female identity both of immigrant women and those belonging to the majority group. This article aims to analyse the identity narrative of one of these female characters, belonging to the majority group, focusing on her cultural identity and, in a second step, on the ways she negotiates the signs which make part of her identity. In this context, identity is understood as a narrative bound together with the signs negotiated in social interactions and which provide the individual with meaning.
