Abstract

A public library is an information center, cultural and leisure activities that aims to democratize access to information for citizens. She is responsible for the memory of a nation, state or city. Recognizing the strong role of the public library for the society, this research aims to map the situation of public libraries in the region of West Cariri Paraiba. The study covers the libraries of that region, registered with the National System of Public Libraries. The research is characterized by being in nature bibliographic, documental, exploratory and descriptive. Methodological approach uses qualitative and quantitative aspects. Its instrument of data collection the questionnaire, developed with open and closed questions. For data analysis, the analysis is guided by descriptive categories. Traces the profile of library managers and shows the current status of these units of information in regard to physical infrastructure and personnel. The situational picture shows that managers are mostly female, aged between 41 and 50 years. Managers have no training in librarianship. Evidence that libraries restrict their activities to the educational function, which characterizes little contribution to the municipality. Concludes that, in terms of financial resources, technology and trained human resources, public libraries in the region of West Cariri Paraiba show a fairly weak. Keywords: Public Library.
