Abstract

The objective is to present, within the scope of Information Science, how generative artificial intelligence (GAI) tools are being used in scientific communication. A narrative literature review was conducted, in which searches were carried out in the Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science databases, using the search terms scientific communication, artificial intelligence, and generative artificial intelligence. The results obtained after descriptive and qualitative analysis of the research findings indicate that the main challenges arising from the use of GAI in scientific communication involve the importance of preserving scientific integrity; the regulation of the use of these tools; and the risk of the emergence of a new digital divide, which presents at opposite poles those who possess the required skills to use the technologies and those who do not. The conclusions point to the need to understand how GAI-based tools work, in addition to the need to encourage more in-depth research in the area, fostering the development of educational strategies that can stimulate the critical, conscious, and ethical use of these technologies.

Currently, she is the coordinator of the Graduate Program in Information Science and professor in the Department of Information Sciences at the Federal University of Ceará. Permanent professor of the PhD program in Information Science at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS). PhD in Information Science from the Graduate Program in Information Science at the Federal University of Bahia (PPGCI/UFBA), with a sandwich period at the Università della Calabria (Unical) in Italy, funded by Capes. Master’s degree in Information Science from the Graduate Program in Information Science at the Federal University of Paraíba (PPGCI/UFPB). Bachelor’s degree in Social Communication (Journalism) from the State University of Paraíba (UEPB). Specialization course in Marketing and New Media promoted by the Umweltzentrum des Handwerkskammer Trier, Germany. Leader of the Research Group on Competence and Mediation in Information Environments (CMAI/UFC). Member of the Research Group on Mediation, Appropriation, and Management of Information and Knowledge/UFS. Her current research topics include science communication and dissemination, popularization of science, scientific publishing, and scientific observatories. Founder and editor-in-chief of the journal Informação em Pauta of DCINF/PPGCI/UFC (2015–2020). Member of the working group for the implementation and management of the Research Data Repository of UFC. Co-coordinator, along with Prof. Gabriela Belmont, of the CMAI Seminar and CMAI Connection. Participant in the cooperation agreement to combat disinformation of the CMAI/UFC Research Group with the Supreme Federal Court. Coordinator of the Scientific Observatory at UFC. Representative of the Center for Humanities on the Teaching, Research, and Extension Council (CEPE/UFC) for the 2023–2025 term. Producer of the program Falando Ciência at Rádio Universitária FM of the Federal University of Ceará. Member of the Executive Committee of the UFC Journal Portal.
