This article reflects on the fundamental principles of popular university legal assistance, based on the multiple activities developed by the Luiza Mahin Popular University Legal Assistance Center (NAJUP), linked to the National Law School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), in urban occupations in the center of Rio de Janeiro. The activities include discussion groups, the production of brochures and technical notes, and legal and procedural monitoring, particularly of ongoing legal incidents in progress on the Land Solutions Commission, the Regional Federal Court of the 2nd Region, and the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro. The methodology combines a bibliographic review with empirical research, through the experience of extension activities. The aim is to understand how critical outreach can contribute to an education committed to popular struggle and to the critical political and legal training of undergraduate and graduate students.
