Abstract

This article is the result of a Psychology undergraduate thesis at the Federal University of Campina Grande, completed in 2022. It investigated the deinstitutionalization processes of individuals with mental disorders in conflict with the law discharged from the Forensic Psychiatry Penitentiary of Paraíba (PPF-PB). Deinstitutionalization is understood as a paradigm that reorients care for people in severe psychological distress through emancipation, rights guarantees, and the construction of socio-affective networks. Based on the question of how this process was being carried out, the study aimed to analyze the reality and institutional trajectories of two former inmates, using intervention and documentary research methods. The results indicated that the Singular Therapeutic Project (PTS), when linked to access to housing (SRT), income (PVC and BPC), and family and community life, can challenge institutionalization and restore dignity.
