Authors

  • Elisabeth Márcia Martucci

Abstract

Education for the twenty-first century has been a question of priority for the international community, taking into account the new social settings arising from the information society. Basic education has been considered as “a passport for life”, through which a body of essential knowledge and a minimum set of cognitive competencies should be developed in all people, in order to permit them to live in environments rich in information and to be able to continue learning. This article includes discussion of international policies on basic education and their effects in Brazil, as well as the strategic role of school libraries for the command of learning tools and contents.
