Abstract

Objective: compare palatine rogositis among monozygotic twins (MT) and investigate the individualizing potential of these structures. Material and Methods: Blind and cross-sectional study through the collection of 46 rugoscopic sheets, including plaster models, of 23 pairs of MT (G1 and G2) chosen for convenience in the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba / Brazil. The Castro-Silva, Silva and Veiga classification was adopted for quantitative evaluation of wrinkles; the Carrea method for analyzing the arrangement of stretch marks; and Bassauri's technique for appreciating the forms of palatine rugosities. Results: 61.0% of the sample was female (mean 23.3 years). The MT among sports 8-14 wrinkles (G1 = 78.3% and G2 = 69.6%) (p = 0.727). For the arrangement of wrinkles, Type IV (G1 = 78.3% and G2 = 82.7%) was the most observed (p = 0.333). As for the shape, the sinuous type (43.63%) was the most expressive, with no circular wrinkles. Among the pairs of MT there was an agreement of 65.2% for the number of wrinkles, 69.5% in relation to the arrangement, being the third left wrinkle having the greatest similarity of pattern between the pairs. Conclusion: MT exhibited 8-14 wrinkles, with a greater amount of Type IV and sinuous shape. Although MT had the same DNA, the brothers did not exhibit high rugoscopic concordances with each other, especially in relation to sulcular shapes, a characteristic that guarantees the uniqueness of the method. Palatine Rugoscopy, owing to present itself differently for each MT, proves to be an efficient forensic tool in human identification, even for people who share the same genetic load.
