Abstract

Epistemology is one of the most important tools in the scientific study of religions, perhaps the most important. For this reason, this term has had a certain fascination in the minds of researchers, and in addition to its vast application, it has been used indiscriminately in the face of a certain “ modism ” in academic texts in general to try to give legitimacy to the texts presented. Thus, epistemology can represent the "study of knowledge" or the "study of the sciences". However, the term epistemology has a certain fascination in our minds. In addition to the valid polysemy of the term, it has been used indiscriminately in the face of a certain "fad" in academic texts in general to try to give legitimacy to the texts presented. The theme of our work is an attempt to make a clear cut about the meaning of Epistemology, indicating what should not be present in its overwhelming polysemy and pointing out ways to correctly apply this term "philosophically speaking" without its meaning being trivialised by indiscriminate use. We also intend to present, through a bibliographical survey, the definitions of the general concept of epistemology and its variations within the theory of knowledge, identify examples of deviations in the use of this term and also present good practices for using the term.
