Abstract

Abstract: In this work, the aim is to analyze the mechanisms through which Christian Churches control sexualities and establish a cisheteronormative norm. We employed a literature review method, seeking to establish the state of the art in the debate on this subject. Through this method, we aimed to identify and analyze the reflections of authors dedicated to gender and religion studies in the broader field of Humanities, particularly in the disciplines of Psychology, Religious Studies, and Theology. Articles, theses, book chapters, and books were considered. In our proposal, we will address the strategies devised by Christian Churches for controlling bodies and sexuality, as well as how this religious tradition essentializes sex and gender. We will explore how these organizations seek to impose social and sexual roles not only on their followers but also on society as a whole. The ongoing research has guided us to consider that the concept of natural law is the foundation upon which naturalistic gender perspectives, informing the understandings of Christian Churches, are built. Furthermore, we have identified that this framework is being deconstructed by contemporary gender and sexuality studies
