Abstract

The impact of Friedrich Nietzsche's thought on the science of religions is examined, revealing a troubling conceptual dilema. By presenting itself as a science, it inherits the claim to neutrality and objectivity from modern science; at the same time, by taking religion as its discursive universe, it perpetuates symbolic structures that promise absolute and transcendent meanings. Thus, it takes the form of a new metaphysics, with an uncritical validation of its central concept: the religious phenomenon, now shaped and legitimized by the ideals of reason that underpin rationalism. Consequently, the sciences of religions bear twice the weight of Nietzsche's greatest criticisms: science and religion as the ultimate expressions of nihilism. The promise of truth remains embedded in values, whether through transcendent revelation or scientific rationalism. It is concluded that Nietzschean thought offers much more than a visceral critique of the sciences of religions; rather, it enhances a reflective effort concerning the philosophical ramifications of its conceptual foundations. It is an endeavor for a necessary rupture, so that the relationship between science, religion, and the human, all too human, condition may be reconsidered.
