Abstract

This research aims at studying a few contemporary evolutions of tarot practice in France, in the context of its growing popularity on social networks, most particularly on Instagram. The methodology relies on digital ethnography (non participant observations with pictures collection) and in-depth interviews with tarot professionals. Our objective is to understand to what extent tarot could be part of an alternative therapeutic culture based on emotions and well being, and the role played by digital comunication in this process. After a literary review on tarot, digital comunication and self-help, our fieldwork analysis is presented. The main findings of this work are related to tarot as an aestetic and fun consumption product; to the valorization of emotions and reenchantment of introspection through simulation of intuition; and finally, to the influence of self-help on tarot offer and its potential role in a therapeutic relationship.
