Abstract

Shakespearean tragedies – Hamlet, Othello and Romeo and Juliet – illustrate how love is a powerful fuel for awakening the most emblematic feelings in the human psyche. This premise is also found in the fantastic tale The Feather Pillow, by Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga, which tells the story of two newlyweds who met a tragic end in such a short time, exposing how heartbreaking love becomes when its expectations are frustrated. Considering that, this paper proposes to analyze the work The Feather Pillow from a psychoanalytic perspective, based on the Theory of Impulsos – of Life (Eros) and Death (Thanatos) – developed by Sigmund Freud, in his text Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920), and to present how this permeates the horror in the narrative. In this way, the discussions presented will cover theories about fantastic narrative, the origins of marriage as an expression of love and Freudian contributions to the understanding of the work.

Possui Graduação, Especialização, Mestrado e Doutorado, em Letras, pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba. Professor Associado I, do Departamento de Letras Clássicas e Vernáculas (UFPB) e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras (UFPB). Realizou Estágio de Pós-Doutorado no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras, da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco - PROPESQ/UFPE, na área de Análise do Discurso, sob a supervisão da Profª. Dr.ª Maria Virgínia Leal. Especialista em 'Psicanálise: Teoria e Prática', pelo Espaço Psicanalítico - EPSI, com monografia orientada pela Prof.ª Dr.ª Maria Neuma Carvalho de Barros. Tem experiência na área de Literatura, Psicanálise e Psicologia Analítica, com ênfase em Cultura, Arte e Processos de Subjetivação.
