Abstract

South America has made significant contributions to the discipline of International Relations. Issues relevant to international security, such as wars, armed conflicts and peace operations, emerge as the main South American topics of research. The aim of this article is to analyze regional academic publications that concern international security and feminist and gender studies. By conducting a research in the databases of Redalyc and Latindex, and using the Publish or Perish software, 64 articles were selected and analyzed. They were published in 20 Brazilian and Colombian journals, from 2016 to 2021. The articles were analyzed according to two questions: (i) are the works aware of local realities and issues? (ii) does the research rely on theoretical perspectives such as postcolonial and decolonial feminisms? In conclusion, there is a broad concern with local issues, such as the situation of peace and conflict in Colombia and gender-based violence, sexual violence, and feminicides, a widespread problem in South American countries. In addition, there is an effort among researchers to develop autonomous, critical and localized thinking.
