This study aims to present a brief argument regarding the Anglo-Saxon poem The Battle of Maldon (c. 1000) and to translate it into Portuguese in alliterative verses, based on Dobbie's text edition (1942). The goal of the translation is to provide a version of the text that follows the original poem line by line, even with syntactic reformulations, due to the distance between the source language and the target language. By respecting the verse, the reader will be able to follow the original version more easily, and the use of alliteration in Portuguese, although limited and at times diverging from the original Anglo-Saxon meter, seeks to offer the reader a poetic appreciation of the work, even if sometimes at the cost of sacrificing more semantically appropriate words for less common ones, in favor of prioritizing sound. Despite its limitations, it is believed that the translation ultimately presents a gateway for Portuguese-speaking readers to Anglo-Saxon literature. Despite its limitations, it is believed that the translation serves as both a gateway for Portuguese-speaking readers to Anglo-Saxon literature and can assist those who seek to read the work in its original language as a study tool.
