Dynamics of innovation in health services

Abstract

Purpose: This theoretical essay aims to discuss the dynamics of innovation within the organizational dimension to understand the strategies that enable the creation of favorable internal conditions to innovation in the process of production and provision of health services, overcoming challenges and achieving better performance in the sector. Methodology/approach: The definitions of innovation are addressed, characterizing the main concepts, configuring them in conceptual elements and types of innovation involving the care/service of people in Health Service Provider Organizations, based on the understanding of the economic- industrial health sector. Main results: The characteristic conceptual elements of innovation comprise the novelty for the health service provider organization, the application component and the intended benefit, manifesting itself in the type of process and service innovation in health organizations, impacting as a category of radical and incremental innovation, involved in development or acquisition activities and preparatory acts with a strategic focus on technologies. Academic contributions: From the analysis and configuration, the innovation dynamic was verified with conceptual elements and typologies involved in activities and preparatory acts focusing on technologies manifested in Health Service Provider Organizations. Moreover, a research agenda is suggested in organizations with an emphasis on the provision of hospital services due to the complexity, volume produced and for being a visible part of the Health Policy. Practical contributions: This work is expected to draw attention to the management practices involved in the dynamics of innovation in health services, which have proved to be strategic and, if encouraged, will favor overcoming challenges inherent to the sector with better performance.
