Feminism in the pages of Revista Adventista: marks of the religious values in the normative discourses on the role of women

Abstract

The present work presents how the Revista Adventista, official theological-doctrinal-journalistic profile periodical of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brazil, treated feminism throughout its history. The research of the sources was carried out in the digitalized collection of the magazine available on the internet. We found 12 editions in which the term feminism was mentioned; six were analyzed in depth. The examination of the selected materials was carried out through an adaptation of the content analysis techniques, organized into pre-analysis, material exploration and interpretation. The texts of the Revista Adventista by male authorship that made mention of feminism are more critical. A more positive approach in the mentions of feminism is present in texts by female authors. The results demonstrate the permanence of traditional values in relation to women and their role in the family and in society, in contrast to the feminist ideals of autonomy, equality and emancipation, which assume a negative bias in the magazine's discourses.
