Abstract

The apprehension of light and shadow, the first experience of human vision, plays an essential role in the various techniques of representing pictorial, photographic and cinematographic images. The light, and its antithesis, the shadow, has fertilized in the collective unconscious all sorts of ancestral experiences that have been reverberating in the social imaginary throughout human existence, mainly through the plastic arts and cinema. This article discusses the representation of light and shadow and their imaginary meanings in the film Fausto, by Murnau.
