Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The contribution must be original, unpublished and not be under evaluation for publication by another scientific journal (otherwise, it must be justified in "Comments to the editor").
  • The authors of the manuscript must have completed a master's degree, which is the minimum qualification for publication, with the exception of reviews, that can be submitted by master's students.
  • The author cannot have published in Áltera Journal in the last twelve months.
  • The submission file must have the extension .doc or .docx, and must not exceed the maximum size of 10 MB.
  • The manuscript must comply with APA Style Guide 7th edition (version 22 May 2021).
  • The text must follow the style standards and bibliographic requirements described in Diretrizes para Autores.
  • The author must update his/her registration with a link to Orcid and submit the manuscript via the system.

Author Guidelines

The following rules must be observed:

  • All papers must be submitted through the journal's system, following the current spelling standards of the language in which they are written.
  • In the case of articles and visual essays, all information that allows the identification of the author must be removed from the file in order to ensure double-blind evaluation. When citing other works by the author, replace the name with [Author] throughout the text and in the bibliographic references.
  • The articles and visual essays must contain:

           a) Portuguese, Spanish and English versions of the title and subtitle.
           b) Portuguese, Spanish and English versions of an abstract of up to 250 words.
           c) Four keywords in the three languages ​​of the journal.

  • Articles, interviews and translations must have a minimum of 6,000 and a maximum of 9,000 words, including references and notes.
  • Visual essays must have a presentation of up to 1,000 words that expresses the meaning of the proposal, as well as follow the other guidelines specified in the "Visual Essays" section below.
  • Reviews should be of recent books (published in the last three years), with continuous text (without abstracts or subsections) and with a maximum of 3,500 words. The complete reference of the work must be indicated: author, title and subtitle, place, publisher, year of publication and number of pages.
  • Interviews should have Portuguese, Spanish and English versions of the title and subtitle. They should also be preceded by a biographical introduction of no more than 1,000 words and presented in a question-and-answer format, with the names of the interviewee and interviewer in bold and the questions in italics.
  • Translations must be preceded by an introduction of up to 1,000 words that briefly addresses the relevance of the author and the work in question. The complete reference of the original article or chapter must be indicated: authorship, title and subtitle, place and year of publication and number of pages.

Format

  • All papers must be submitted in Word format (.doc or .docx), justified, with 1.5 spacing in the body of the text and 1.25 indentation in the first line of each paragraph (with the exception of direct quotes of more than three lines).
  • Margins should be at the default setting (top and bottom 2.5; left and right 3.0) and there should be no spacing between paragraphs.
  • Notes must appear at the bottom of the page in sequence with Arabic numerals, Times New Roman font, size 10 and single spacing.
  • References must come after the text, ordered alphabetically and according to APA Style Guide 7th edition : https://www.cogitatiopress.com/doc/APA%20Style%20Guide%20(7th%20ed.).pdf.
  • Direct citations within the body of the text must be accompanied by the author's name, year of publication, and page number(s), following one of the following formats: (Geertz, 1957, p. 235) or according to Geertz (1957, p. 235).
  • Indirect citations must include the author's last name and the year of publication, for example: (Geertz, 1957).
  • If a quotation contains 40 words or more, it should be presented in a separate block of text, with the same line spacing as the rest of the text. It should begin on a new line, indented 1.27 cm, and without quotation marks. The source (author, date) should appear before the quotation. After the period at the end of the quote, the page number should be provided, following this model:
  • According to Lévi-Strauss (2003):

      There is, therefore, much more in the notion of the total social fact than a recommendation directed to researchers not to neglect the relationship between agricultural techniques and ritual, or between canoe building, the form of family clustering, and the rules governing the distribution of fishing products. The total social fact does not merely mean that everything observed is part of the observation; but, above all, that in a science where the observer is of the same nature as the object, the observer is himself part of his own observation. (p. 25)

  • Manuscript images (photographs, figures, maps, plans and graphs in jpg or tiff format) must be sent in the body of the text (without compression) with the desired final size, resolution of at least 300 dpi and caption indicating title or description with the source (authorship and year).
  • Typographic resources must be used uniformly:

           a) Italics: for foreign words, titles (books, events, etc.) and emphasis.
           b) Double quotation marks: direct quotations of less than three lines, quotations of particular terms or words whose connotation deserves emphasis.
           c) Bold: should not be used.

Guidelines for coordinating dossiers

Revista Áltera publishes two thematic dossiers annually, which may be proposed by a maximum of three professionals holding a completed doctoral degree, who must be identified at the time of submission. Regional diversity and internationalization are key selection criteria, and proposals are especially valued when the coordinators come from different institutions, regions, and/or countries.
Furthermore, it is mandatory that each dossier include at least two articles written in a foreign language (Spanish or English).

The dossiers consist of a maximum of 10 articles that must comply with the standards available on the journal's website. Articles may be submitted by invitation from the organization and/or by public call. In both cases, all articles are subject to a peer review process (double-blind review).

The dossier proposal must be sent to the email revistaaltera@gmail.com containing:

  • Title of the dossier.
  • Brief presentation of the organizers.
  • Description of the dossier with up to 1,000 words, including a justification on the relevance and actuality of the topic, the divergences or tensions considered and the possibilities for improvement and/or deepening of the topic.
  • At least 6 article proposals including the author's name, institutional affiliation and an abstract of up to 250 words about the intended manuscript.

Guidelines for publishing editorial supplements

Áltera publishes editorial supplements on an ad hoc basis, organized by a maximum of three researchers with a PhD degree.

The supplements are collections of articles, interviews, technical reports, or anthropological reports, as well as visual essays, films, drawings, collages, and similar scientific productions related to the journal's scope.

The number of articles, interviews, technical reports or anthropological reports, visual essays, films, drawings, or collages, and similar scientific productions that can be published in a supplement is limited to 10 and must follow the journal's guidelines.

Films must be accompanied by:

  • A link to access the video on an open and free platform
  • Synopsis in Portuguese and English (and/or Spanish), with a minimum of 400 and a maximum of 600 words each.
  • Title of the work in Portuguese and English (and/or Spanish);
  • Minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 keywords (in Portuguese and English/Spanish);
  • Information about the author(s): Institution, position/function, email, ORCID link
  • Technical information about the work: Direction, screenplay, photography, etc.
  • Specific cover for the video/film, in JPEG or PNG format, size 10x15 (portrait), maximum 1 MB.

Supplements may be included in a regular issue as a special dossier or separately as a special issue. In both cases, applicants must submit their proposal to the editorial board, including a description of the supplement, its composition, defining the types of contributions, and the mini CVs of the applicants and contributors to the supplement.

The members proposing the supplement are responsible for the selection, review, and correction of manuscripts, in accordance with the supplement's standards and formatting.

The editorial board is responsible for examining the quality of the works submitted to a supplement and may reject those that do not comply with the scope, ethics, and scientific rigor.

Open Space

In addition to the dossiers, the magazine has a space that is continually open to publications with free themes, receiving and publishing articles, visual essays, reviews, interviews and translations in Portuguese, Spanish and English in a continuous flow. All papers must be submitted through the journal's system, following the current spelling standards of the language in which they are written and the standards found in the "Guidelines for Authors" section.

Visual Essays

Photographic essays and other visual products must be submitted through the system, as with other manuscripts.

Essays must be sent in accordance with the following specifications, in Word and PDF format (maximum 10MB each):

            a) Presentation of the essay/text:

- Abstract of no more than 250 characters with spaces in three languages (Portuguese, Spanish, and English);

- Title and subtitle in three languages (Portuguese, Spanish, and English);

- Presentation text of the visual essay of no more than 3000 words, in one language only. The text must reference anthropology/ethnography or social sciences and related areas.

- Bibliographical references in only one language.

            b) Images:

- A4 format, portrait or landscape, with 5 (five) to 12 (ten) pages, with a variable number of images (photos, drawings, etc.) and free layout. It is desirable that the author creatively compose and organize the images in the essay, which may include more than one photo per page; the visual essay committee may select the photos presented according to aesthetic coherence and visual language.

- The photo essay and other visual products must refer to ethnographic research or any related field.

- Include captions and/or descriptions of the photos with the source (author and year) in one language only. To ensure anonymity, when the photo is taken by the author, name it as AUTHOR.

 

 

 

Reports and Experiences

This section accepts submissions of ethnographic reports, graphic diaries, and various anthropological experiences. They should contain a maximum of 6,000 words, including references and notes, and 5 to 20 images are accepted and edited per the guidelines of the Visual Essays section. The editorial committee will be responsible for reviewing the submission in accordance with the scope of the journal.
