Dialogues between science and ancestral knowledge for urban resilience

Abstract

Faced with the challenges posed by climate change in the Anthropocene, cities need
to rethink their adaptation and resilience strategies. The complexity of socio-environmental issues mainly affects the most vulnerable populations. In this context, social participation and the hybridization of knowledge are emphasized as necessary
to find mechanisms that make it possible to have a less fragmented view of reality,
highlighting the importance of inter- and transdisciplinary practices in dealing with
socio-environmental problems. This article highlights the importance of integrating
scientific knowledge with ancestral knowledge and Nature-Based Solutions (BBS), creating a form of hybrid technology that can respond consistently to problems and increase urban resilience. Based on a bibliographical review of studies on interdisciplinarity and knowledge hybridization, the article proposes that by valuing traditional populations and their ways of life, more resilient, prepared, and even fairer cities can be built to face climate challenges. To this end, we must emphasize the importance of public policies that value and strengthen these essential practices to attain ecological and social resilience against climate change.
