On the possibility of a dialogue between Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Arthur Schopenhauer through writing: from the natural feeling of pity to the ethics of compassion

Abstract

This article aims to clarify the connection between Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Arthur Schopenhauer through the lens of writing. The methodology applied in this research is critical analysis of bibliographic references. The central issue revolves around Rousseau's autobiographical writing and Schopenhauer's critical theory of writing, understanding that both intended to dispel false opinions, criticisms, and discredit with which they had to contend in their respective times. It is understood that, through writing, the philosophers were denouncing the evils they suffered, which will allow us to understand that their moral philosophy is fundamental to the continuity of their work. From this context, we find that the relationship between the feelings of pity and compassion explains why they continued to denounce the evils and vices of the societies in which they were embedded. To this end, we will evaluate the different nuances of these moral concepts and how they function in the process of identifying with the condition of those who are in a state of suffering.
