Abstract

This study addresses the topic of school libraries from the perspective of Law nº. 12.244/2010 and Law nº. 14.837/2024, with the aim of mapping the existence of school libraries in public schools in the municipality of São Raimundo Nonato, in the state of Piauí. The specific objectives were to discuss the concept and role of the school library in light of the current legislation; to identify early childhood education and elementary schools that have school libraries; and to verify, among these institutions, the presence of librarians. Data collection was carried out in November 2025 through a structured questionnaire and inquiries addressed to the Municipal Department of Education, answered with data from the 2025 Educacenso System. The results showed that none of the schools in the municipality has a formally established school library or a librarian. Although some school units have reading rooms, these present precarious infrastructure, which limits their use by students. It is concluded that the implementation of Law nº. 12.244/2010 and Law nº. 14.837/2024 is ineffective in the municipality, directly compromising the quality of education and denying students the fundamental right to equitable access to information and specialized pedagogical support, thereby reinforcing the urgent need for oversight and effective actions to ensure full compliance with the legislation.
