Sentinel-2 imagery usage on environmental monitoring of land use and occupation in a microwatershed in Central Brazil

Abstract

In the last decades, the concern with sustainability has increased the demand for projects and strategic plans that integrate economic and social aspects, reducing impacts on the environment. In this sense, this study aims monitoring the adequacy of land-use in the Ribeirão Extrema microwatershed, Distrito Federal, based on cross-mapping between land-use and occupation in 2019 and agricultural aptitude map through Geographic Information Systems and Remote sensing. To this end, a planialtimetric and thematic database was prepared for region. In addition, we acquired an image from Sentinel-2 orbital sensor of October 2019. The image was subjected to classification regarding to land-use and occupation, using the MAXVER (maximum likelihood) algorithm. It was observed that 80% of use in 2019 was related to agricultural activities. Kappa index validation reached 81% accuracy. Based on the methodology, we identified 62.33% of agricultural activities occurs into its capacity; 4.33%, under use above capacity, which causes environmental degradation, especially in areas of permanent preservation. The application of the technique was considered satisfactory because adequacy of land-use could be assessed. Continuous analyzes can improve results.

Nowadays, Develops research in the scope of Geographic Information Systems, Google Earth Engine; Soil spectroscopy, Digital Soil Mapping, Geoprocessing, Remote Sensing (VNIR-SWIR and microwaves region) in Geoprocessing and Pedogeomorphology - GeoPed in Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine from University of Brasília. Furthermore, he has experience in the areas of Soil Microbiology and Sustainable Agricultural Production Systems.

Marilusa Lacerda, University of Brasilia

Marilusa Pinto Coelho Lacerda is a Professor in University of Brasilia and currently works at the Geoprocessing and Pedomorphogeology Laboratory - Geoped - FAV in University of Brasília, developing research in Pedogenesis, Pedomorfhogeological modeling, Soils distribution in landscapes, Soil Digital Mapping, Sustainability of lands use, Quality of Soils and Water, Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics (GIS). Research projects are developed in coffee agroecossistems in Minas Gerais, Distrito Federal and Goiás state, Brazil. Their current project is estimation soil moisture by Remote Sensing and Sustainability of water use of Distrito Federal and Soil Digital Mapping at Centro-Oeste region in Brazil.
