Abstract

The breeding of wild birds as pets is a widespread practice in Brazil, and in some cases, regulated by law. The preference for some species for regularized breeding in Brazil is still unknown.  To understand the profile of wild bird breeding, we consulted SIPASS data system of the municipality of Porto Velho - RO, in the year 2018. We registered the registration of 4,475 individuals, belonging to 52 species and five families, where these are raised by 1,396 people. We highlight a greater preference of the species Sporophila angolensis. Of the 52 species recorded, five are in some category of threat to extinction. The breeding preference is concentrated on species of high value, especially in relation to vocalization, and coincides with the most trafficked species in Brazil. Regarding the birds with some degree of threat to extinction, the decline in their populations is related to illegal capture and removal from the wild.
