Environmental perception of students living around a protected area: a case study

Abstract

This study investigated the environmental perception of high school students in a public school, focusing on the importance of environmental protection areas and marine biodiversity. Initially, despite their proximity to an ecologically significant environment, the students did not express a clear understanding of the importance of environmental conservation. However, throughout the study, a positive shift in the students’ perceptions was observed, which was linked to environmental education activities such as workshops, interpretive trails and laboratory classes. These initiatives were fundamental in helping students develop a deeper understanding and greater appreciation for the local environment. The study concluded that environmental education played a crucial role in transforming students’ attitudes and behaviors, emphasizing the relevance of biodiversity and sustainable practices.
