Abstract

What are the characteristics and what is the relevance of Max Weber's sociology of prophets? To answer these questions, the article places Weber's reflection on the prophets in the context of biblical research at his time. Despite the changes in this area, it is argued that the current status of the Weberian sociology of prophetism consists in approaching the phenomenon from multiple levels. In the first place, a transcultural perspective is adopted that defines this phenomenon from the general plan of the charism. In the western intra-cultural plane, in turn, prophecy is defined by its ethical or emissary character. On the internal level of Israel's history, Weber proposes an original sociological perspective that defines the prophets by their political role on the international level. Finally, from the point of view of its historical evolution, the evolution of prophecy is described as a process of internal rationalization and as the starting point of the process of disenchantment of the world
