Qualitative and quantitative aspects of feeding, and growth of Prochllodus brevis from the Gramame River, Paraíba, Brazil are discussed, based on 201 specimens (113 females and 88 males) collected between November/1994 and October/1995. Estimated values of 0 suggest that growth isisometric for the species (0= 2,97 for males and 0 = 2,95 for females); females reach larger sizes than males. Condition factor values for May and June suggest that spawning occurs in those months. The high number of empty stomachs observed during the months of April, May and June indicates that the species drastically reduces feeding during the reproductive period. Prochllodus brevis is illyophagous and diatoms predominate in its diet.
