In this work, we propose to analyze and understand the intellectual trajectory and literary production of the novelist Maria Firmina dos Reis, as well as to understand and discuss the gender relations and violence present in the novel Úrsula, thinking, above all, how they are represented in the narrative. Published in 1859, it can be considered the first novel by black and female authors in Brazil. The narrative tries to address latent issues in a nineteenth-century, elitist Brazil, built under social stratification, indigenous genocide, and the slave regime. The author, in this sense, breaks the wheels of inequalities that sustained violence.
