Abstract

This paper aims to examine, through quantitative data, the activity of swine showed a decrease in negative environmental impacts, comparing the number of assessments every year since the inauguration of the environmental agency in the far west region of Santa Catarina. In addition, it presents a history of the swine production in the region, listing the main pollutants resulting from the activity and its consequences on the environment and the main laws and regulations governing the activity. To evaluate the performance in environmental management of swine production, were raised the total number of assessments conducted by EPA during the period studied, using as an indicator the number of annual filings for the period 1999 to 2010. It starts from the assumption that the increase or reduction of fines reflect the behavior of producers regarding compliance with laws and regulations related to the activity and the level of commitment in the relationship with the environment. The study consists of research whose approach is descriptive quantitative approach. As for the procedures is identified as documentary research, and data were extracted from the files of the environmental agency. Therefore, we conclude that the pollution problem caused by the lack of efficient management of the activity has a profound influence on the environment and that the table presents only be reversed when the various sectors concerned charting together common goals and objectives can alleviate existing problems, achieving the economic objectives in a sustainable manner the environmental point of view. The discussions and the numerical results presented showed that there was a decrease in negative environmental impacts during the period studied, either by raising awareness of pork producers, whether by the socialization of environmental problems and the willingness to work with either the prevention or more rigorous action imposed by laws and regulations and the repressive action of the supervisory board.
