Abstract

This article is a study on the concept of otherness in the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1995). The aim of the research is to understand otherness as the fundamental aspect of Levinasian ethics and how it can contribute to a more humanistic society. Through the analysis of the texts Entre Nós: Ensaios Sobre a Alteridade (2005), Totalidade e Infinito (1980) and Humanismo do Outro Homem (2012) it is possible to comprehend important concepts, directly linked to alterity, which through the hermeneutic method we try to put on evidence, such as intersubjectivity, transcendence and being. Levinas points to the lack of new ethical assumptions for cooperation and humanization of human beings. Thus, ethics is presented as the first philosophy, built in a face-to-face, which encourages to solidarity and, in the case of interpersonal relationships, to responsibility. In Levinas' philosophy, the foundations for a new humanism are found, where the Self and the Other enter into a relationship of communion.
