Subcompetência sobre conhecimentos em tradução: resultados da primeira fase de um estudo longitudinal

This paper presents results of a studycarried out under the project "Translation Competence and Translator Training: developing subcompetencies specific to translators" (CNPq 485158/2013-2). The project aims to investigate, from a processual approach, the development of the knowledge about translation subcompetence in translation students. It is based on the Translation Competence (TC) model proposed by PACTE (2003), which defines TC as a set of knowledge and skills necessary to carry out a translation task. According to PACTE, TC consists of five subcompetencies: bilingual, extralinguistic, instrumental, strategic and knowledge about translation, being the latter the focus of this study. It is intendedto characterize three distinct stages of its development in six translation students through a longitudinal study. With methodology based on PACTE (2005), questionnaires on knowledge about translation were used to investigate the participants’ subjective concept of basic translation principles. Preliminary results indicate that their knowledge about translation subcompetence is still underdeveloped. We aim to verify, from the comparison of preliminary results and data collected in the next steps of the project, the impact of formal education in the development of the subcompetence under scrutiny.
