Abstract

With this essay we intend to analyze “Tropicalism”, cultural movement that apprehends certain aspects of a so-called “Third Worldism” of the Sixties, incorporating, however, other aesthetic strategies such as anarchy, carnavalization, and Oswald de Andrade’s modernist style to elaborate an alternative image of Brazil. Our purpose here is to discuss this incorporation as a key element in the constitution of a peripheral cosmopolitanism in Brazilian culture. Keywords: Brazil; cosmopolitanism; identity; Cultural Studies; culture industry.
