Mensagem numa garrafa virtual: pode haver diálogo entre o tradutor e o teórico da tradução?

Abstract

This paper was designed to discuss the influence of theoretical knowledge expressed in messages posted on an online forum called Comunidade Virtual da Linguagem (CVL). The analysis of the messages, sent as part of a debate on the role of the translator in Brazil, compels us to examine the discourse of CVL members, most of whom are scholars and students in the field of language (linguistics, applied linguistics, and translation studies), although they also include professional and amateur translators. The discourse seems to be extremely unionist, and it shows the inability of these scholars to give rise to theoretical issues (in this case, BERMAN, 1985/2007; VENUTI, 1995, 1998/2002) relevant to their discussion about and among themselves. These theoretical issues involve, among other things, a reflection on the dichotomy foreignization/domestication in translation practices in Brazil.
