Abstract

The Master’s research, of which this visual essay is a part, problematized traditional knowledge in the process of harvesting the mangrove crab (caranguejo-uçá) in the community of Caratateua, Bragança-PA, Amazon. We followed five families of crab gatherers, using a qualitative methodology with participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and photographic records carried out between March 2021 and March 2023. The essay reveals that: a) the traditional knowledge acquired in the gathering of caranguejo-uçá in the village of Caratateua takes place in a non-formal way, through social interaction, observation of more experienced gatherers, and teachings passed down by their ancestors; b) the processing of the caranguejo-uçá involves a series of stages permeated by traditional knowledge.
