“The C-section I wound up with”:
“Non-narratives” and the frustrations of birth as a project

In this article, we seek to understand why certain birth experiences do not become material for public narratives, suggesting there are also models that structure these accounts. We propose that these “non-narratives” are means for women to reclaim agency over their stories of an event experienced with frustrations. In this analysis, we draw on the emotions expressed in these narratives as a means to comprehend broader social dynamics both in the relationship with health professionals and with the broader discourse on humanized birth. Frustration, in this context, emerges as a key emotion when the real experience of childbirth distances itself from the idealized one, relating to the idea that childbirth conceived as a personal project involves a significant affective investment. The analysis is based on observation and interviews with women participating in a WhatsApp group for pregnant women and new mothers.
