This article aims to explore, through Paul Tillich’s reflections, the concept of revelation, with a close look at the cognitive function of ontological reason. In this context, revelation presents itself as a manifestation of the foundation of being, an invitation to human knowledge to delve into its depths. Theology, by its essence, cannot become an autonomous island in epistemological terms; on the contrary, it must be based on the characteristics of cognitive reason that are intertwined with the nature of revelation. For this to occur, it is imperative that theology develop a robust description of cognitive reason, taking into account the conditions of human existence. The objective of this text is to investigate the tensions of existential cognition, which require an understanding of its ontological structure. It is this polar structure of cognitive reason that not only allows the emergence of existential conflicts, but also instigates the inquiry into the depth of revelation. For this analysis, we will draw on the works of the German philosopher and theologian, as well as other thinkers who have contributed significantly to this topic.
