This article reports on the experience of creating a catalog of the educational press of Maranhão, covering the period from 1839 to 1968. The proposal arose from the elaboration of a study whose objective was to gather, organize and make available information on educational periodicals that were scattered and often difficult to access. The lack of standardized descriptive instruments made it difficult to recover these historical sources, which motivated the application of the fundamentals of Information Organization (IO) as the structuring axis of the work. Bibliographic and documentary methodologies were adopted, focusing on the descriptive and thematic analysis of the periodicals found, mainly in the digital collection of the Benedito Leite Public Library. The process involved stages of mapping, surveying, cataloging and systematizing data by municipality. Each record included elements such as title, periodicity, editorial directors, imprint, abstract and access link. The catalog produced aims not only at information recovery, but also at valuing and preserving the educational memory of Maranhão. It is concluded that OI plays a strategic role in mediating between historical documents and users, promoting access to knowledge and contributing to new research possibilities in the field of History of Education and Library Science.
