Abstract

This research aims to analyze hate as a characteristic used by operators of the Criminal Justice System (SJC) to explain homicide crimes against people outside of the heteronormative matrix. I conducted interviews with SJC operators in João Pessoa, Paraíba, between 2017 and 2018. According to the interviewees, hate is a category that helps to characterize motivation for death - bringing it closer to the lack of rationality or a moment of madness; and which is constantly intertwined/confused with hate crime. By understanding those conceptions about hate and homophobia, we can reflect on the structural role of violence based on gender and sexuality.
