INFORMATION AND INNOVATION IN THE SYMPTOMATIC CARBUNCLE VACCINE

Abstract

The Symptomatic Carbuncle (Peste da Manqueira), together with the development of the vaccine against it, was chosen as an example of a scientific event which highlights information as a strategic element to the technological and scientific innovation process, even from a historical perspective, that is, when the concept of innovation was not present in the development of actions such as the one considered on this study. The understanding of the importance of the event lies in the explanation of the symptoms treated by this vaccine. The importance of information is indicated on the report of bibliographic assets of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute and on scientific exchange to its researchers, carried out by this institute, on a national and on a worldwide basis. The result points towards the key role of information, at any time, to innovation as an integrated system to the development of Science and Technology of a country.
