Abstract

This work is a revision of the empirical literature on the valuation of the services provided by the libraries or systems of libraries, with emphasis on the public libraries. Attention was paid to the experiences which had used the method of contingent valuation (initially employed to evaluate environmental goods). This method is described synthetically. Methodological aspects and the main aspects of studies carried through in the United States and Europe are discussed. An application of the method for measuring the benefits of a business library is analyzed in Brazil. Results obtained through alternative methods are also briefly discussed. Implications for public policy are also analyzed and lines for future inquiries are indicated. The results indicate that the value of the benefits received by the library users and non-users surpasses the costs to offer them.
