Focusing on Guimarães Rosa introduction of an idiosyncratic literary genre which he named ‘estória’ and adopting a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach to text production (both original and in translation), this paper investigates the thematic organization in three estórias from Primeiras estórias. Drawing on SFL view of the system of Theme as organizing information through particular choices at sentence level, and through the accumulation of these choices at text-level, it can be held that the linking of all sentence-level thematic choices provides data on the different discourse structures produced by an author and a translator. Moreover, thematic organization is fundamental to understanding the different representations construed in source and target texts spanning from sentence level to generic structure. In this paper, the thematic choices of the three estórias and their translations into English were systemically identified and analyzed, revealing thematic organization patterns and pointing out shifts in the translation process. The results indicate different textual configurations between the source texts and the target texts, mainly due to different generic characteristics from Rosa’s genre conception, estória, in the Brazilian literary context and the conventional genre, short story, as it was translated into English.
