Pirandello's poetics is anchored in the actor's desire for "disappearance," and in the idea that the interpreter should be capable of superimposing "transparency" on the dramatic character. This concept is not very distant from the theories of the naturalist theatre at the end of the nineteenth century. However, we will see that it presents a significant change in perspective from the presuppositions of the naturalist school in terms of the function of the interpreter and his relation to the character.
