Noite na Taverna (1855) approach, in the set of related short narratives, macabre and somber themes under the half-light of a meeting between friends over wine. About this work, we focused on the narrative of Genaro and his love conflicts, guided by Georg Simmel (2001) and André Capelão (2019) about love, proposing parallels with authors referenced in Azevedo's works, namely: John Milton and his sublime setting of Heaven and Hell; Dante Alighieri and the lustful ones present in the second cycle of Inferno. The objective was to read and analyze the narrative based on Edmund Burke's (2014) conceptions about the beautiful and especially the sublime, through the other theoretical observations mentioned, as well as the comparative readings. It was observed that the sublime present in Azevedo's work is both provided by the sensations of vastness of nature and by the delight in contact with the horrible.
