INTRODUCTORY CONSIDERATIONS ON CO-SPEECH GESTURES
KENDON’S CONTINUUM, DIMENSIOS AND THE INTEGRATED SYSTEM

Gestures are strongly connected to speech and the nature of these interactions has attracted considerable attention from researchers in the areas of language and multimodality. In this work, we present some explanatory concepts regarding the Kendon´s continuum related to taxonomy (gesticulations, speech-framed gestures, emblems, pantomimes and sign languages), based on the works of McNeill (1992, 2002, 2006, 2015) and other authors, as well as regarding more specific typology (dimensions) that considers iconic, metaphoric, deictic and beat gestures. In addition, some aspects related to the approach of gesture and speech as an integrated system will be contemplated.
