This text is a composition of two ethnographic works by the Cuban anthropologist Lydia Cabrera (1899–1991), translated from Cuban Spanish into Brazilian Portuguese: “El monte” and “Ukano Mambre”. Both were originally published in the book El monte (1954). My translation is a second version. The first one was published in 2012 by the respected Brazilian anthropologist Carlos Eugenio Marcondes de Souza (1933– 2023). The proposal to these works in retranslation is justified by the relevance of Lydia Cabrera’s research regarding the presence of African culture and religion in Cuba, influences that also extended to Brazil and deserve renewed attention in the current context. Furthermore, this Portuguese version of mine offers a perspective on the text grounded in the concept of black translation, a practice that proposes alternative ways of being in the world. While the anthropologist’s version of translation belongs to the field of anthropology, this new translation reflects the perspective of the translator and the translation discipline. The aim here is to complement the initial translation and continue bringing the work closer to an interested audience.
